abstract = "Environmental impacts due to the construction of a dam in a river
stretch should be adequately assessed. Complimentarily, the high
sediment load of a river has a direct influence on its water flow
and also on the corresponding sedimentological and morphological
aspects of its evolution in the stretches before and after dams
constructed with the purpose of generating hydrolectric energy
power. Therefore, the understanding of the dynamics of the
sediments that are displaced into the river associated with a
contributing drainage basin is required to provide the necessary
framework to evaluate the economic and energy potential of such
investment with respect to hydroelectric power installed in this
river. This study aims to evaluate the use of Geographic
Information System tools - GIS and remotely sensed images for
monitoring of suspended solids in the Madeira river basin. The
focus is concentrated in this study only in the river patch. To
reach the objective we conducted an analysis of the potential of
NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index) and also of the linear
model adjusted for Tassan (1987), which estimates the total
suspended solids (TSS) based on the products obtained by the
sensor Landsat OLI / TIRS, to estimate the TSS values. Later,
field sediment concentration values collected spanning the years
from 1987 to 2015were correlated with scenes acquired for ten days
along the referred time period. The best results achieved were
obtained by NDWI calculated with the R and SWIR bands and with the
                         linear model.",
